After resting to regain her HP, Cat awakens fresh and clean. She cooks a meal from snake meat worth 1 ration. Then she inspects the loot.
Nya, we still need to decide what to take and leave Nya!

Yulya rests to restore her mp after filling the focus and gladly eats Cats snake stew. She stores the bandit brooches with the other loot in a barrel and gives the badger ring to Alice.
I think you are the only one immune to its side effects!

So now let us depart to a lower level! I do not even want to think about what awaits us there!

[Time: Tuesday, Spring 26, 19:25, 9C Calm]

You settle in and within minutes of resting you get an unexpected visitor.

[Lore 1d20+5=19]

From the glowing non-corporeal vestments, this appears to be a former wizard, the bones animate and creek in a unsettling way and the power emanating from this form is unmistakably that of a lich with the exception that there is no phylactery on his person, which is rather puzzling. He carries a scepter with a brilliant crystal of the same color and shape as those clusters that were growing in the chamber with the Myconids.

[Arcana 1d20+5=24]

Yulya's eyes fixate on this implement and recognition floods her mind, this is a legendary artifact of a bygone age, a royal scepter that was lost hundreds of years ago and though she has no idea what effects or powers it would wield, she knows that its power is devastating, if it still contains charges and is still functional it is well advised not to be the target of that ornate wand's magic.

The jaw of this frightening skeletal being opens and your minds are filled with knowledge. He addresses you as Mormesk, a powerful mage of the Greycloaks of Neverwinter, wizard premier of the king, sent to protect the Forge of Spells. You understand this statement but also question it as he is communicating as if he is still a corporeal being, as if he doesn't fully remember he's now undead.

[Lore 1d20+5=9]

Neither his name not the forge of spells register with you, he continues:

The impression you get is that this is the year 941, but you know this isn't right, it's 1296, and when your minds connect that to his, he pauses in confusion a moment then continues. Until he met his end in the spell battle at the climax of the orc invasion of Phandalin he was a well known and respected protector of the realm.

However, you sense centuries of lost time and hatred, frustration and boredom. Ancient memories of lost comrades and friends as if it was yesterday and one final memory is rather recent, a confrontation with bandits that blew the door off the 'visiting wizard' chamber. In fact, further puzzling memories follow and he's apparently rather confused, he recognizes new excavations and none of this woodwork you now occupy with your tent. He wonders how that's possible in such a short time. But all that is immediately overshadowed by one question of grave concern, and this comes out in a shrill bone chilling voice.

"What is the disposition of the Forge of Spells, I no longer feel its presence."

Yulya gives the badger ring to Alice.
I think you are the only one immune to its side effects!
Alice takes the ring and looks at it for a moment.
I take your word for it!

Alice tosses the ring into her mouth like a piece of canddy and stores it in the lolibank, handing Yulya 1gp in exchange.

[Time: Tuesday, Spring 26, 19:25, 9C Calm]

You settle in and within minutes of resting you get an unexpected visitor.
From the glowing non-corporeal vestments, this appears to be a former wizard, the bones animate and creek in a unsettling way. He carries a scepter with a brilliant crystal of the same color and shape as those clusters that were growing in the chamber with the Myconids.
Alice is cheerfully impressed by the strange being she characterizes as yet another curiosity on par with, no - topping even the Myconids
Oh cool! He's floating! I've never seen anything like that!
The same pretty glow as the shrooms! Are you their master?

Spotting the scepter, even the magic-blind alien can reach some conclusions.
Ah! You're the one who made these beam-holes and obliterated the bandits, right? Impressive! But please don't make holes in us! We are on your side ok? We hunt down the bandits who broke in here and defiled your vault! But I don't know about the Forge of Spells. Do you, Yulya?

Having nothing to add, Alice reaches in her mouth and shows the Jade Frog to the strange being like a child presenting her teddy bear.

Not good with ghosts, especially those who beam holes into people, Cat takes a step back, her ears folded sidewards, as she tries to remain inconspicuous.
N-Nya?!

In contrast to the frightened Cat and curiously amused Alice, Yulya experiences an oddly calm reaction to this horrifying undead appearance. More akin to sorrow and pity.

He carries a scepter with a brilliant crystal of the same color and shape as those clusters that were growing in the chamber with the Myconids
Like Alice - Yulya immediately identifies this being and the wand as source for the beam holes. To her own surprise she still feels nothing. There is no point in running hiding let alone fighting this undead. Yulya speaks a silent prayer to Eldath and SheShe and hopes he can be reasoned with.

A sense of worry befalls Yulya as she realizes this powerful man - or what is left of him after centuries - probably has lost most of his rationality.

The impression you get is that this is the year 941, but you know this isn't right, it's 1296, and when your minds connect that to his, he pauses in confusion a moment then continues. "What is the disposition of the Forge of Spells, I no longer feel its presence."
Seeing Cat trying to hide and Alice trying to entertain a newfound curiosity akin to an exotic animal, Yulya finds herself stepping forward to address the sudden visitor as it is her role as party leader, presenting her adventurer's tag and Holy Symbol as she bows. Yulya uses Persuasion.
Sir Mormesk I am Yulya a Peace Cleric of Eldath and adventurer of the guild of Neverwinter - leader of this party. These are my comrades Alice Ashley and Cat. We are here on a quest to rid this mine of orcs and other foul beings. I humbly ask you to listen to our story as I believe we share the same goal. We will lend our aid to you to the best of our limited abilities and answer your questions as far as we can but I am afraid we lack crucial information about what is going on here. Please help us out so we can support you!

To keep it short we were tasked by Dwarves of the Rockseeker family of Phandalin to investigate this mine which is now rightfully theirs. A mine which was described to us as a simple ore mine called the Wave Echo cave. We are not aware of the Forge of Spells or the battles that took place here centuries ago! Nothing to be honest! Yet when we arrived here we found no sign of living orcs, but human bandits and bugbears, even fume drakes from the Underdark!
Sir Mormesk as far as our investigations have led us -  a criminal organization of bandits has infiltrated this mine- for reasons unknown to us. The very bandits you defeated recently. That organization called the cloaked wolves appears to consist mostly of ordinary humans but also a high level druid, elves and even half orcs! The leader appears to be a powerful drow elf wizard by the name of Nezzner who also calls himself the Black Spider. He is said to be here in this mine! We interrogated bandits and they told me they found a method to nullify magic probably by earthstone shackles. I do not know if this would affect your powers Sir Mormesk but be careful!

But that is not all! Unfortunately the world itself is facing difficult times right now! Monsters run rampant along the Sword Coast. Refugees are taking shelter in the city of Neverwinter. We were among them originally before we became adventurers to make a living. The town of Phandalin was destroyed by orcs and only recently rebuilt. But soon afterwards it was cut off from trade due to banditry and monster attacks. And on top of that - a magic spell of monstrous proportions is freezing over the entire land from the High Road over Phandalin to the mountains here! And a white dragon has made its lair on a nearby peak. All of this appears to be connected to this mine! This mine we know nothing about.

Yulya sighs and takes a deep breath closing her eyes.
Sir Mormesk forgive my insolence but I believe more than 350 years has passed since your - passing. If you doubt me please look at yourself in the reflection of the lake here! Centuries have passed since you battled the orcs here with your comrades! And it looks like this place has been abandoned until quite recently. No it was even sealed! There were inscriptions speaking about a powerful watcher at the entrance and that nobody should enter.
Yulya can't help but wonder if Mormesk was indeed the watcher in question...

Oh there was another inscription saying the greatest treasure was taken about 10 years after uh your passing so in 951 if I remember correctly. So maybe what you cannot sense anymore is long gone. But I neither know what it is nor where it could be...

Sensing it is not wise to hide anything from this man, Yulya also presents her wand.
And my apologies for taking this wand from your fallen wizard comrade whose remains rest in this lake - I spoke a prayer for his soul. We are not strong and we must fight evil by all means necessary. I hope this is also what he would have wished. That said Sir Mormesk please tell us what you remember! What happened here and above all what is the Forge of Spells?

Yulya - now for the first time nervous - glances over to Ashley with a pleading expression and whispers:
Please be courteous with this man or we are all dead! Well at least Cat and me! And make the Bigglesworths presentable! Maybe he liked cats when he was alive!

Alice tosses the ring into her mouth like a piece of candy and stores it in the lolibank, handing Yulya 1gp in exchange.

Regardless of her intent, once the ring entered her being, its effects are subtle, she can feel it attached to her, snug and secure, under her command but also demanding attention as this ring is special under her care. Some say these named rings are not made of pure arcane energies but the energies of the creatures of the realm as well, and Alice unmistakably feels the living energy of the creature it was named after.

[This ring can only be removed when struck by the first rays of sunlight. In this particular case, when worn by someone immune to death, the wearer will be immune from being downed three times a day, and if struck down will immediately be left prone but with 1HP; on the fourth time, the wearer cannot revive until the following morning.]

Ashley's rings, especially the Ring of the Magi, are just settling and she feels a rush of power, intelligence, charisma, and wisdom beyond her means.

"Wow, I feel like I can do almost anything now," she mumbles to herself.

Mormesk's unearthly gaze fixates on Alice, and she gets the sense that he confirms making the holes in the rocks and notes his absolute displeasure for what the bandits have done to his waiting room and front door. He feels suspicious when you mention your ignorance of the Forge of Spells considering that was the main reason why the arcane and material fortifications of this mountain were forged in the first place.

Upon seeing your offering, Alice's hands suddenly feel lighter and before she can even react the frog is gone without a trace.

[Alice's offering was accepted, he decides not to blast holes in her. The frog was likely teleported to the chest.]

N-Nya?!

His attention shifts to Cat, eying her with some curiosity, unfamiliar with her species or beastkin in general, unsure what to make of her, he decides she must be a companion, like a pet, and sensing Ashley's ring offering her even animal handling knowledge, he assumes she is her master. Before making judgement his thoughts are interrupted.

Sir Mormesk I am Yulya a Peace Cleric of Eldath and adventurer of the guild of Neverwinter - leader of this party... This mine we know nothing about.

When she mentions orcs his spirit lightens, as if remembering fondly the times he dispatched those foul beasts with his considerable power. Mid rant his attention shifts to the desecrated and befouled Ghoul corpses scattered on the floor, you can feel his displeasure rise.

He knows nothing of Rockseakers, or dwarves for that matter other then knowing they are to mountains like lice are to beasts and rabble, never far and ever infesting.

At the mention of fume drakes and the Underdark he stops her momentarily, sensing her thoughts he understands the location and a flash of light surrounds him.

In that ever frightening tone he utters, "The way will be shut."

He doesn't recognize the authority of Yulya's plate or symbol, he cares not of earthstones, refugees, cloaked wolves or dwarves, or bandits, monsters rampant along the coast or even dragons, these are all symptoms of the same ills he once fought; however, when mentioning the drow Elf Nezzer his ghostly skull nods in recognition. He recognizes this presence as a power to reckon with.

When she mentions Phandalin, he seems to lighten further, the local town he does remember fondly, but in his mind you see images of stone buildings, fortifications, and military presence--only now remnants remain in the ruins and the town is currently built of wood upon those old foundations--this mental feedback disturbs him greatly.

Bombarded by your memories, he considers you vermin no different than the orcs or bandits at this point, hearing you know nothing of the mountain, nothing of the Forge of Spells, to him you are looters and that judgement is reinforced by the returned wand and the presence of the rings Ashley now wears--those same rings were once worn by a fallen compadre. The thoughts in his mind darken: urchins, invaders, usurpers, murderers, thieves! You can't hide your mind from him, he knows your memories but not your intent. Yulya feels this unease.

Oh there was another inscription saying the greatest treasure was taken about 10 years after uh your passing so in 951 if I remember correctly. So maybe what you cannot sense anymore is long gone. But I neither know what it is nor where it could be...

When he senses her mention of the watcher he makes a connection to something else, no, he is not the watcher. He is further puzzled by your conclusion that he has passed, he nearly chuckles at the insolence and weak attempt at deception. He has a mind to show you the meaning of passing but his curiosity is greater than is offense and he lets you continue.

His raising anger subsides slightly as you present the wand. He recognizes it and just like the frog, suddenly Yulya's hand feels light, the wand is gone, he has accepted your offering and is reconsidering your disposition. This break in his thoughts only now allow him to see your protectors, Eldath and SheShe, both of them as if standing behind you, he understands that your destruction will have to be handled delicately as angering demigods isn't wise even for someone of his power; there are protocols to uphold.

[Yulya and Alice have each lost an item, please remove them from your documentation.]

You sense him thinking, though his thoughts are foggy and scattered, like a slightly senile old man. His attention turns to Ashley and you can tell he feels a slight hesitation. Likely he can see the mechatherial wings that emanate from her ethereal form, his mind can tell she's a shapeshifter, he can tell she has been in the negative plane and survived it. He can feel the remnants of the Raven Queen within her, he can also sense SheShe and Corellon Larethian. Seeing no connection to Cat he looks to Cat again with the intent to see what god may be protecting her, and he can clearly sense the Cat god. He is now of the understanding that he cannot destroy you without cause and this is when his attention fixates on Ashley's new rings.

Ashley pulls her hands away and hides them behind her back. "I stole these fair and square and not from some old skeleton! You can't just leave your relics laying around and not expect them to be claimed and I claim them now by the code of adventurers."

[Persuasion vs DC20 1d20+11=23]

Only by the grace of her ring of the magi, the very device she is accused of pilfering, is she able to overcome his inclination to rightfully condemn her to death immediately for looting. So though he does want these back and he does want the coin and treasures you all carry as partial reparations, instead he rethinks this whole situation on the utterance of one important word echoed by Yulya's thoughts as well, adventurers.

His distaste for adventurers is clear, he was a ward of the king of Neverwinter, a high wizard of the court, formally trained and tested on real world battles, he earned his power not by the grace of some God, but by shear sacrifice and diligence; however, adventures had their uses so his attention returns to someone else, a drow by the name of Nezzer.

The full extent of your crimes are laid clear though his mind, even the ghouls you fought were once known to him as allies of a sort, helping to keep the mountain clear of intruders, but he keeps his composure and begins to form a proposal.

"I have felt him, this drow Nezzer, his presence recently has caused a foul energy to enter the mountain, and his doings here have caused cracks in the material plane, he must be stopped by any means and not allowed to escape justice. Thus in lieu of your sentence for murder, trespassing, wanton destruction, and looting, you will be spared if you are willing to dispatch him and are successful in bringing his head to me. If you agree, this is how I will know you are being truthful, your rights as adventurers will be honored and you will be well compensated. Fail and I will have your heads. I offer you until the next moon cycle to accomplish this without interference from me."

[You have been accused of murder, the victims lay at your feet, the ghouls, wanton destruction and the evidence is the damage done to the mountain from your flippant use of explosives, the evidence for looting is pretty clear as well.]

"I'm keeping them!"

[Ashley's stubbornness is irrelevant. You have two choices, one, accept his offer knowing that Nezzer must be killed and his head returned to acquit you and spare your lives, or two, attack this powerful being, and in doing so also allow the opening to the Underdark to forever infest the mine with denizens of that realm. The power of this being is likely on par with the power and resources of Nezzer.]

Alice looks puzzled seeing the froggo disappear out of her hands.
Ah well, an investment. I'll get it back eventually.

Realizing the meager 'proposal' that basically means either getting killed right now or by that overpowerd drow elf boss down there later, Alice looks at the magical ghost with the pretty blue glow she still finds very interesting
Aww come on now!
We may be mere rookies and have no idea what's going on here but we are still on an official mission given to us by the town of Phandalin! We didn't come here to loot anything! It's a favor to the town and its inhabitants even if it is in sad shape now! And nothing will improve if you kill us here!

We saved two wizards as well, one from a rampaging Rothé in Neverwinter and also a royal wizard girl on the way to Phandalin too - Summer of Leilon. She's our friend and in Phandalin right now. If she had known what is going on here I'm sure she would have come along. She would have been thrilled to meet you!

"I have felt him, this drow Nezzer, his presence recently has caused a foul energy to enter the mountain, and his doings here have caused cracks in the material plane, he must be stopped by any means and not allowed to escape justice.
Alice's eyes narrow.
You say this guy can weaken the Material Plane and create portals to what you call the Underdark or Negative Plane? That's not good at all. We must wipe him out immediately. Don't worry, I'd even pay to bring his head to you as long as I can keep the ears - but why not have some fun and come with us? Besides this is no joke anymore. We must fight this peril together so help us out! We only have a summoner but no wizard to counter spells!
Alice again reaches into her mouth and tosses in the signet ring of the noble she ate as an additional offering
Friends?

Alice turns to Yulya
Hey Yulya, how long until that next moon cycle thing? I've lost all track of time in here...
Ah and Daran! He knew! You can't tell me he didn't know what was down here and about the Forge of Spells! He knew and told us something about orcs! Even paid my breakfast to send me to my 'death' here! I'll remember this! Good prank though...

Alice's standards about who gets away with what are probably even odder than Mormesk's

Re: Campaign #1 - Somewhere on the Sword Coast

And nothing will improve if you kill us here!

You get the thought that less looters is always a good thing and perhaps your bodies will make for faithful zombies to fight off future bandit incursions, and that might be adequate compensation for your crimes. The thought crosses his mind that it could be fun trying to turn you into ghouls.

Rothé... Summer

He gives you the sense he doesn't care about Neverwinter affairs at this point. It's just more fodder he's used to dealing with when he's stationed there.

as long as I can keep the ears... Alice again reaches into her mouth and tosses in the signet ring of the noble she ate as an additional offering

You get a negative response from that, you fell like you better keep the ears intact. Though he's somewhat amused by this 'magic trick' of producing treasure from your mouth, he simply accepts the items without a response because at this point either you'll have to receive payment which may include these items or you'll be dead and he'll delight in opening you like a Christmas present to see what else might be inside and rightfully his. They're gone.

Ah and Daran! He knew! You can't tell me he didn't know what was down here and about the Forge of Spells!

That hit a nerve, the wheels in his mind begin to turn.

"Daren..."

He senses the images in your mind but they look off, old, decrepit even and he responds with another.

"This couldn't be the same Daren Edermath, could it?" He brings his bony hand to his chin and searches the minds of all of you, sensing all the interactions and you get images of the hills covered in trees and Daren hiring locals to clear it for an eventual farm, "Has it really been hundreds of years?"

He's lost in thought for a moment his memories of Daren are of a young and haughty adventurer that fought orcs alongside him, collecting their tongues as he went. He chuckles then hardens seeing now how he's aged. "Enough! Tell me of your choice quickly, I have much to do."

At this point, he's either going to kill you outright and take on Nezzer himself or let you try first, perhaps at least softening him up so he can finish him off later. He won't fight along side you as he considers you to be criminals and untrustworthy.

He will close the rifts and the tunnel to the Underdark as well as then begin his investigation as to the disposition of the Forge of Spells and he's quickly running out of patience for pesky looters.

"Oh, and as for this watcher you are wondering about, I have also felt a presence below, in the bowels of the mountain, a presence that has taken over the lower reaches that has attempted to probe my doings from time to time, this may be the watcher you were informed of, whatever he is must be a powerful magic user as well. Dispatch him as you see fit, he's not affecting me currently."

As he's impatiently waiting for your decision. Ashley feels him probe her mind and she fights him, nearly to the point of casting a curse on him with the little MP she has left and you can guess what that's over. You get confirmation that this is indeed the heart of the mountain and this wizard is very confused as to how you've looted it.

His raising anger subsides slightly as you present the wand. He recognizes it and just like the frog, suddenly Yulya's hand feels light, the wand is gone, he has accepted your offering and is reconsidering your disposition.
Yulya looks at her empty hands in despair like a child being robbed of a candy cane.
First the rings and now the wand...

You get confirmation that this is indeed the heart of the mountain and this wizard is very confused as to how you've looted it.
Yulya had hoped Mormesk would overlook the crystal but it was clear something like that would not escape him.
This was retrieved by the Mechatherial Demigoddess herself, she was directly interfering to guide us - no mere mortal like us could have acquired it and you know that well Sir Mormesk!

Being confronted by countless accusations and death threats from an undead, for a moment Yulyas face hardens and all doubt and fear disappears as if her patron gods speak trough her
Sir Mormesk!
There is no such question as a choice! Our quest is to take out Nezzner and so we shall proceed - with or without your demands. You are not our enemy and we have no intention of fighting you. We have no means to do so either in our current state. You may kill us as you wish - but by Eldath and SheShe - I will not accept your questioning of our Righteousness! The Gods are on our side and the place that awaits us in Heaven is truly magnificent. I have seen it Sir Mormesk! Can you say the same? What and whom do you fight for? You care neither about your fellow wizards nor people in general. Except for Sir Daran Edermath your comrades are long dead. And he sent us here to collect orc tongues making no mention of you or a Forge of Spells. You and this entire place are long forgotten by the world. Whatever you guarded is gone. I pray for your undead soul and when the time comes I shall liberate it so you can finally rest. This is all I have to say. Now if you excuse us - we shall no longer waste your precious time! Farewell until we meet again!

Yulya bows and leads her party down the stairs to continue their impossible battle as she slowly returns to her usual self, slowly lurching towards certain doom that lurks in all directions.
Two demigod-level undead watchers and an equally powerful drow elf mage as enemies! Why not ten and a few dragons on top of it? All I wanted to do was live peacefully in my cabin. I did not sign up for any of this! Is this what the gods do to those they favor?

Ashley sees Yulya's direct defiance of the defender of the mountain and as he charges his wand she jumps in,

"Now you decide to act tough? I'm supposed to be the impudent liability!" Ashley rolls her eyes. "Mr. Mormesk, yeah so you kinda hurt her feelings I think when you thought she was a criminal. Now, I'll take that responsibility of looting, Alice is the one who used the explosives, technically Cat and Yulya did fight the ghouls, but they attacked us first in all fairness. So maybe it was different 300 years ago, but adventurers accept quests not ultimatums. If you think we can kill Nezzer, and you obviously don't think you can just go snuff him out easily, then maybe don't poke the hornet's nest. Didn't you have any royal protocol back in the day? We are under contract with a royal mage just like you already and if you don't want the Leilon royal army in here looking for us, maybe don't kill us so flippantly.

[Intimidation/Persuasion vs DC20 1d20+11=23]

Ashley wipes her brow, "We'll bring you his head for pay, and if that clears our name, then fine, otherwise you'll have to give us a chance to prove we're telling the truth in some other way if we fail."

Ashley's words have soothed him, he had never heard of a kingdom of Leilon but after probing her memories he took that at least at face value. Without a word he lowered his wand and paused.

"Yeah, so if we do kill the guy, which may or may not happen, how much will you give us for it?"

He seems to indicate it'll be worth 4 mythril coins.

Ashley blinks, that's 40 platinum... "That's a start, and we'll take that wand back and the frog and get to keep the rings of course. Also this crystal is now owned by the current owners of this mountain, who we are also under contract with to retrieve, and that's not you."

He chuckles in a eerily frightening way, "You have a knack for negotiation that reminds me of my times with my own party."

"You will be granted this if you return with the head, and if not, you will return with this royal mage for further investigation and verification."

"Deal Yulya? I bet Summer would be up for it."

[He's keeping the offerings as collateral until you clear your name and is otherwise willing to seek other means to clear your names. The choice remains.]

Alice watches Yulyas performance with astonishment
Hey is she being possessed by some god like Ashley back then?

Alice moves in front of Yulya as Mormesk charges his wand
Hey hey we said we're off to get you this guy's head! There's no point in fighting over formalities! All is good, let's get along!

Alice whispers to Ashley
No idea how you do this but great job turning the tide! We tried to be nice to him and it only escalated things!

Alice gesticulates to Cat to help shove an angry Yulya away from Mormesk
Not that you're wrong but you could have formulated this a little better! You're not immortal like me and nobody can revive you if you are killed! Damn I must get my old form back, this would solve a lot of problems. Haa, if only we had THEM ready before I departed on my journey! Oh yeah, issues with cocky mages and undead acting tough would literally disappear in an instant!

Despite several near-death experiences, getting robbed and insulted, Alice still firmly retains her positive attitude towards Mormesk for whatever alien reason. She waves goodbye to the unhinged undead while laughing to herself.

See you! We won't disappoint you! I still wish you'd join us, you'll miss all the fun!
