"Smith's tools? You're a smith? Yeah, I got those, I'm a blacksmith myself. But they're expensive, sorry! 25gp."
"As for a glaive, nope. We mostly got dwarfs here. Got all sort of war-axes and hammers, but those guys don't use reach weapons. I could make you a custom one, but that would take about a week. Less if you assist me. Will also cost about 25 gp. And don't think about going anywhere else, I'm the last smith left in this town. But hey, i promise I'll teach you a lot, hehe!"
Cat isn't concerned about the price and considers it a good investment.
Nyaa I'll take the smith's tools Nya yes I can do some smithing and carpenter work Nya but I need training Nya! I'd love to make a glaive together with you Nya and learn Nya I hope we have the time Nya Yulya will be able to say Nya!

Wait, don't you need a furnace or something for smithing? What's the heat source? Magic?
Cat's tail whips around as she thinks.
N-Nya I hadn't thought of that Nya...
Linene Nya can I do smithing out in the field with the smith's tools Nya? How does this work Nya?

Will you be able to make magical weapons?
Nyaa no Nya at least not with my current skills Nya. Can you Linene Nya?

Cat is enthusiastic about the topic and tries to squeeze as much information out of Linene as possible.

With the smiths tools secured, Alice keeps quiet about the ball bearings and caltrops. But she waits for an explanation of a heat source.
I can help with many things, but I can't breathe fire, ain't no dragon. In contrast to - other 'people'...

Alice still hasn't completely given up on the idea that Summer might be a dragon in disguise.

Linene takes an abacus from her desk and goes over the loot, calculating the total amount. She begins to sweat and breathe heavily towards the end.
"Oof, this is more than I had anticipated. I can offer you 190 gp, I'm basically broke with this! I know you'd get more in Neverwinter, but this isn't Neverwinter!"

She catches herself feeling relieved that Ashley isn't around anymore to barter.
"Your purchase amounts to 65 gp, so you would still receive 125 gp from me."
She makes a pained face seeing all the gold coins she just received disappear again.

SELL:  190 gp
BUY:   -65 gp
_____________
TOTAL: 125 gp

Linene gives Cat a thumbs-up
Very well, come by as soon as you are ready then, my apprentice!"

Linene Nya can I do smithing out in the field with the smith's tools Nya? How does this work Nya?
Linene raises an eyebrow and looks at Cat as if she had just said something incredibly stupid. She runs her hand over her face and mumbles to herself.
"Looks like we'll have to start with the basics here..."

Then she turns to Cat.
"Look, there are two different things. Cold work like sharpening blades, tightening rivets, straightening bent metal, replacing buckles, fastening a loose weapon pommel or repairing a damaged shield boss can usually be done with the tools alone and don't require a heat source.
But hot work like reforging a bent piece, welding cracks, reshaping armor, repairing a broken sword or making new metal tools that require forging needs a strong heat source."

She scratches her head.
"A smith usually works at a forge, I've never done any smithing in the field. As you don't have a red dragon at hand, and I assume your cleric can't cast a sustainable hot flame, you could probably create a small portable charcoal forge. A normal campfire can heat small pieces, but that's not enough for serious iron or steel smithing. With bellows and charcoal, a field forge could reach forging temperatures. I'd have to give that some thought and we'd have to experiment a bit. It won't replace a conventional forge but we might come with something usable. That'll be a challenge, I like it!"

[Please tell Linene if you accept her deal and finish the transaction. If you are ready, continue on to Harbin]

Cat is satisfied with that answer, meaning Linene will deal with the problem.
Sounds great Nya, thanks Linene Nya! Yulya Nya, will we have time tomorrow so I can go practice Nya?

Being the worst negotiator ever and in no need of haggling Yulya gladly agrees to the deal and bows.
Nonono I apologize for bothering you! We accept your offer with gratitude! I hope this equipment serves you well and is not stolen but...

Yulya thinks for a moment
...pardon me the question but will you sell this loot to these Redbrands and Mr. Glasstaff? You mentioned he would come bothering you due to the acquired weapons and armor. I still do not understand what to think of those people. Are they the same as the bandits? Or do they really serve the town? I respect if you do not want to talk about the subject but knowing who we are dealing with would really help us out, Miss Linene. Yet another unreasonable request from me...

Yulya Nya, will we have time tomorrow so I can go practice Nya?
Yulya looks a bit lost.
Only the Gods know what the future brings! I currently see nothing that speaks against it and we have no plans for tomorrow yet - but that might change any minute! If possible I would like to have a day of rest to practice my new skills as well...

Linene makes a pained face seeing all the gold coins she just received disappear again.
Alice holds out her hand with grin!
Gimme back my shiny coins and more! I'd ask you to pour them directly into my mouth but that's even too much for me to stomach...

Alice tilts her head.
Charcoal's nice and all but wouldn't a portable furnace be large and heavy? Can we build that in the field from soil or something? I can operate a bellow and control the fire like with Cat's cooking, but that's all. Magic sure is convenient, but we don't have that option.

Alice looks over to Yulya to confirm she's not capable of producing scorching heat. After all that cleric is full of surprises. But definitely no dragon.

Alice nods while swallowing as many gold coins as her lolibank can hold (the 54 gp she previously gave Linene), and hands the remaining 71 gpto Yulya.
Yesh, who's that guy and what's the fuss about him?

"Patience, little one! I'll think of something. After all, I'm the best blacksmith in town - and the only one!"

Linene thinks for a moment.
"Hmm, you see... I'd suggest you don't get involved with the Redbrands, but I guess you won't be able to avoid it. So I'll tell ya what you need to know."

"The Redbrands were originally a large family of troublemakers. I wouldn't say criminals, but not far from it. Old Glasstaff ran the Sleeping Giant Inn, drank more of the booze himself than he sold. Allegedly was some sort of mercenary once but I've never heard of a person who'd vouch for that. Here everyone knew him as a bad innkeeper. Terrible food, dirty dishes, rude staff. Everyone in their right mind avoided those guys. When goblins started to attack villagers, they saw a chance to improve their rep and formed a vigilante group. Ran a big mouth how they'd kill them off in flash. Of course even goblins were smarter than a band of drunkards and they got beaten to a pulp. Didn't stop them from continuing to fight, gotta hand it to them! They were stupid and weak, but no cowards."

"Things changed when Garaele died."
Linene points to the entrance of her store.

"Across the square, there used to be a shrine of Tymora, the goddess of luck. Very popular in a town of miners looking for riches. Sister Garaele was the priestess and our only cleric in town. To keep it short, one day the shrine suddenly collapsed while she was praying there, killing her instantly."

Linene struggles to keep a straight face.
"You understand? The priestess got killed by the shrine of her own goddess of luck! What an irony!
Don't ask me why, but Glasstaff completely lost it over that incident. I don't think they had anything to do with each other apart from being roughly the same age though she was an elf, so looked like a young lady, and he like an old man, but whatever. Where was I?

Oh yeah! Ol Glasstaff had a meltdown, cursed the gods and swore to kill anyone who'd continue to pray to Tymora or otherwise touch the shrine. Then he left the village and hid in the forest. I've heard that rangers from Leilon stumbled across him in the deepest wilderness weeks later, completely eviscerated and in full delirium. They dragged him back to Phandalin and he wasn't seen or heard of for months. We assumed he had died at home. The entire family vanished from the public. The loud ruffians suddenly turned into ghosts.

Then one day Glasstaff reappeared. Stronger, healthier and sharper than ever before, but also even crazier. He took on the attire of a beggar-monk and declared he had a revelation and was chosen to create a new religion. Nobody took him seriously but within a short time he transformed his family into a highly disciplined army of zealots. Assassins if you want. Creepy guys who barely ever spoke. That was shortly after bandit attacks began and Phandalin became fully isolated. And now the Redbrands fought back with success and cruel efficiency. But only for those who paid a monthly 'fee' and only within the borders of the town. Those who refused to pay were repeatedly assaulted and looted by bandits, goblins or other monsters. Strange coincidence, isn't it? But I don't blame the villagers. They have enough problems already and the Redbrands promise safety. Most paid, except me, Toblen and the dwarfs of course. Including the Rockseekers. Go figure!"

Linene huffs.
"As for whether I'd sell them anything - they are customers like all others. If I refuse Glasstaff, he'd just send his strawmen. I'm not happy about dealing with those guys, but I'm not in a position to be picky about customers. Whatever, that's none of your business. I'd be happy if you focus on getting Gundren back safely. What's the status? I keep hearing the Rockseekers are finally about to return!?"

Yulya listens to the story with growing concern - still unsure what to make of it. This man appears to be more than troublesome. As always, Yulya closes her eyes and hopes that things will just resolve themselves.

She nods and bows.
Thank you for this valuable information, Miss Linene. We will be on our way now so you can get to work! We shall return around 1pm!

Yulya turns to Alice and Cat.
Let us continue to Sir Wester now, we do not have much time!

Alice lets out an inappropriately loud laugh as she vividly imagines the situation.
But this guy sounds interesting. How come we've never heard about him before, let alone seen him?

Alice sighs.
As we said, no idea. We just returned! The dwarfs at the inn were optimistic the Rockseekers would return soon, and something about the siege of the goblin king's castle going well, but yeah, I'll refrain from further comments on their judgement...

Cat is just happy she got her tools and an opportunity to practice metalwork. With a heat source also in prospect, she is more than satisfied. Not paying attention to bandit vs. counter-bandit stories, Cat continues to browse the store until it's time to leave. Cat says goodbye to Linene for now and follows to others to Harbin, the strange not-so-bad noble.
Nyaa he really saved us with his potions Nya. I hope he's satisfied with the ore samples we brought Nya...

[Time: Monday, Spring 31, 09:30, 1°C, light wind, sunshine]

You leave the Lionshield Coster and proceed to Harbin Wester's store through the cold morning air. The streets are still eerily empty aside from a few birds looking for stray grains on the ground. Shortly before arriving at Harbin's house, a villager approaches, seemingly appearing out of nowhere.

The young man wears a thick cloak against the cold and pays no attention to you, staring at the ground as he moves with hurried steps. As he passes by, without looking up he whispers in a barely audible and monotonous voice:

'Father wishes to speak to you. It is important!'

Before you can react, the young man disappears behind a corner, again leaving you alone on the streets of Phandalin with more questions than answers. Yulya surveys the area but finds no trace of another soul around. Puzzled you move on and enter Harbin's store. You are in luck as it is open, with Harbin sitting behind the counter doing paperwork. He looks up as you enter, and jumps up from his chair as he recognizes you.
'Ladies!'
'I am relieved to see you have finally returned! I was really worried after not hearing anything from you! Did you return from the mine? How did it go?

He quickly gets a few chairs and gestures you to sit down.
'Can I offer you some tea?'

[Harbin eagerly awaits your report though he seems a bit uneasy there are only 3 of you]

Yulya nervously looks around.
What was that about? Was that one of the Redbrands? I assume by 'Father' this man meant Mr. Glasstaff. What do you think?

Thank you - gladly Sir Wester!
I apologize for not visiting you sooner but we arrived late yesterday - straight from the mine as you say. It was an ordeal and your potions saved our lives. We barely made it using all of them - well, except Ashley.

Yulya gives a brief report of what happened at the mine, omitting nothing except the mechatherial goddess M3gan, feeling this would add more confusion than clarity and is of no importance to Harbin.

We have recovered at least some ore samples for you...
Yulya gestures to Cat to hand the samples and the hammer over to Harbin
...but Sir Mormesk, who knows the mine well said that further samples cannot be acquired without a detailed map - which was in possession of Sir Gundren when he was abducted. So my conclusion is that while the mine undoubtedly holds enormous riches in ores, it also holds great danger. There are still monsters like the bulettes around, and most likely further undead. We only explored the main ways. I dare not say what further abominations might lurk in there. As for the forge of spells - it appears to pose no imminent threat but you should know that this mountain is far more than an ore mine...

Oh and as for the Cloaked Wolves bandits - here are brooches we recovered. I must however warn you that they might be a sort of tracking device. Storing them at your house might endanger you. We also recovered a tracking whistle and left it with Master Edermath. I pity the fools that would try to mess with this man.
