I finished my kitchen, only 10 and a half months and $50k, I did 95% of the labor myself, it was worth it.

I think you're a tad out of touch with modern, even this century's, building costs. The average cost per sq.ft. of new home construction is $150-400, so a 1500sq.ft home (small) would be 225k to 600k and that's not unreasonable once you cost it out.

So I paid 15k for sewer work, replaced the sewer for kitchen and garage, 12k for cabinets (they were amazingly cheep for what they are, and all good wood too, no particle board, no vinyl I some how must have been channeling Ashley energy because they gave me 50% off when if I didn't even ask it would have been full price), 6k for countertops and one backsplash behind the stove, that's already 33k, about 1.5k for plumbing then there's (all done by me): tile floor, electrical, insulation, earthquake upgrade, drywall paint, hardiboard, tile, trim, undercabinet lights, other lights, pulls were expensive, I bought a new table saw as part of this, a good one, and then the organizers for the new cabinets, it's really nice, about 33% more space than I had before, great upgrade. I went from one circuit shared by kitchen and living room to 7 independent circuits for the kitchen. One just for microwave and one for toaster. Oh and a custom shelf for the microwave done again by me, all in maple. 

Worth it 10/10

ok you did a lot more than just the kitchen if you made the sewers too but still for most europeans thats a lot of money. even for germans lol.
50k is a 2 year averge income here in the capital. probably 3y on average for Lithuania i dunno. you could easily buy building materials for a small house for that here. having one built is much more expensive but a lot goes into wages for the workers.

us is so oddi earn a bit more than the average wage but still saving up 50K would take forever. yet i live comfortably in a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood here. no drug addicts no islamists or other aggressive refugees no serious crime. safe at night clean good infrastructure and health care. forest hills in walking range. no beach though lol that a 4h ride and then its the cold brown soup of the baltic sea. but its not far to crystal clear lakes so fuck the beach

but regarding housing i think its the same everywhere. no average person can afford to buy a house in a decent location anymore. it would take an upper middle class couple 30years to pay their debts. only works in the countryside if you can do most yurself and have other craftsmen friends that help you build your house

Here, rent goes up 10% a year because they limited it to 10%, before that people got deals and breaks. I rented rooms only in college, I slept in my car for a summer, I rented a closet one summer, I couldn't afford rent here now.

If you want to live simply near muddy water, there's plenty of places where everyone is dirt poor and housing is only 10k in the Midwest, but it's dilapidated and there are no jobs or services and the crime is deadly.
