I want to learn to play the guitar, but I always fail to start. It's a very daunting task to start with, really. We live in a house where there are many guitars and other instruments, and I grew up with drums being practiced right next to me every day. Guess I really should start.

I've never really been the one into music in my family, but I have two sisters who both were into that stuff so we did have instruments lying around at home. I'd try them out sometimes, didn't exactly have the internet around for music sheets so I'd have to learn to play vidya music by ear on the piano and shit. But I don't really play and currently I don't own anything.

Definitely start, Yogi. If you start now, you might even be proficient enough to play some technical stuff in five or six years! Unless you're a prodigy, or something. Also, bleeding fingers is normal and good because calluses, but it's not good to play while your fingers are bleeding, because strings and blood don't mesh well. And also you're required to play nothing but Smoke on the Water and I Am Iron Man for at least one month, no skimping!

The horn is correct, although, you could always find a cheap keyboard on some corner of the internet, or something. It really only has to make piano sounds in the beginning, you can go further than that only if you wish.


So I opened up the program with intent to start learning FM Synthesis, and then remembered that I have no wifi and so no YouTube, which is integral in learning how to do this shit for me. It took a forty-part series just to thoroughly learn how to work everything in the base program (not the synth in question), I'll need at least another twenty for this :c

Maybe some day I'll be Skrollex. Sigh. Some day.

So when I possibly move out this August, or around that time as my dad needs me to get out asap either way, because he needs a room for my three-year-old brother who still sleeps in the parents' room, I'll be forced to live in the living-room of the new place, cause three other roommates and l drew the short straw.

Anyway, regardless of how much that sucks, I probably won't be able to save for a nice and big desktop cause it's cramped as shit, so I was wondering what people thought of spending ungodly amounts of money on a gaming laptop. I'm on the fence about it because on one hand, holy fuck, expensive for less, but on the other, portability and taking up less space is really convenient. And even if I don't move out, I don't have the room for a desktop here which blows, so I'm really considering it.

I've looked through some boutiques, and for about what I'd want, I'm looking at 2k-2.5k USD, and ohgod it's so much. Is this something I'd regret later on? It really would cover anything I'd realistically need it for, even regarding recording music, but I'm wondering if it would be better to buy something significantly cheaper and just wait until the day I have the space for a desktop (Of which ideal specs would be over a grand less).

All theoretical right now, as I don't even have the job I'm probably going to have until I've put on more muscle (moving furniture, brother does it and is paid very well, all things considered there), but yeah. I mean, I know some of them can be really nice, but I don't know if there's anything I'm not considering that I might facepalm at later. Anyone ever bought a pricey laptop? Thoughts or regrets?

Not a fan of laptops so I guess others are going to have to talk about this. I don't really think laptops have the power to edit a lot of stuff in the long run, either, but I'm more of a video editing person than music editing person.

You'll have to plug in that gayman laptop so often you might as well just get a desktop.

An audio interface would do the brunt of the work, Sands. You can probably work music off of a fairly shitty laptop as long as you have one, just might not be too fun. RAM and SSD help load samples and plugins speedily, both of which the lapop would (ideally) have.

And Mega, I hear that said a lot, is it really that bad? Friend has a laptop for school that'll only go four or five hours, so that seems to be a general thing. I don't know if I'd have it off of the wall much anyway, but I do go out a good bit these days, and I've toted a gaming desktop from house to house before, not too fun. If it's that much of an inconvenience though, I'll look into it. Don't know if I'll be in a situation where I'm out and about for more than a few hours without an outlet, but if none of them are better than three or four hours, I can see that being a deal-breaker.

Floor sleeping isn't too bad.  Its good for the back I hear, and it feels good.  Good support and everything.

Just get some "standard" computer and put some more RAM in it.  RAM is pretty cheap, and if you're on the fence about gaming it will help you decide.  But I guess gaming computer is an ambiguous term, so what do you want in this computer?  Hi-def audio?  Multiple HDMI outputs?  2 TB of ROM?
